PRI’s “The World”: Taiwan’s Indigenous People Finally Get an Official Apology

Much like indigenous peoples in the United States and Australia, Taiwan's indigenous groups were forced aside after outsiders declared the land to be their own. Now, just two percent of Taiwan's population hails from the country's 16 officially recognized indigenous tribes.
This week, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen presented a formal, public apology to the indigenous people of the island. Brown Professor of Political Science and Assistant Dean for Educational Policy Shelley Rigger provided commentary and context for the story, reported by PRI's Shondiin Silversmith.
