Poet Clint Smith '10 talks about his new book of poetry, and how he uses the art form to explore living as an African-American man in the United States during an hour-long broadcast of WBUR's "Here and Now."
How do you raise a black son in America? The segment begins by quoting Smith from a 2015 TED talk on that subject, and about "The Talk" that many young African-Americans get "when they became old enough to be mistaken for a nail ready to be hammered to the ground, when people made our melanin synonymous with something to be feared. But what does it do to a child, to grow up knowing that you cannot simply be a child?..."
